Why Revisionist Historians are Wrong
Besides the Vigilante novels, I've written (so far) two short stories set primarily in Montana. Some, such as "Comes a Stranger," are based on my parents' reminisces of growing up around the turn of the last century (1895 - 1920).
Others, such as "Fear of Horses" are based on nothing much but living in the West most of my life.
"Comes a Stranger." Based on a surprising encounter my father and grandmother had with an outlaw in the summer of 1901. This story was originally published in New Works Review, Summer 2008. It is now available on Kindle under the title, Stranger Riding By.
"Fear of Horses." This story, in which a fearful woman battles her inner demons to make friends with an unmanageable horse, won the 2008 LAURA award for the best short story. This annual short fiction contest is sponsored by Women Writing the West, an organization of writers devoted to stories of the women's West. You may read it online, at the WWW website, or here. (The LAURA in named honor of Laura Ingalls Wilder.)
