The Wildlife Sanctuary Garden

The Wildlife Sanctuary Garden was my second book, published in 1999. It came about from my experience trying to grow roses in a shady, damp climate of Puget Sound, in Washington State. I constantly battled rust, mildew, and blackspot.

There has to be a better way! I thought, so I researched and planted only plants that liked damp shady areas in zone 8: azaleas, rhododendrons, and ferns, to name three. With Dick's engineering expertise, we built two ponds that needed no filtering to keep out impurities. By the time we left that area in 2001, the garden pretty much maintained itself. Besides, it was a delight with all the urban wildlife that visited. One lovely March day I watched two Northern flickers do a mating dance along a branch of a big-leaf maple about 30 feet in the air.

The Wildlife Sanctuary Garden contains the how-to's and other information about building a wildlife sanctuary garden of your own. It is now officially out of print, but I have a few copies if you'd like to buy them. The price is $12.95, plus $3.00 s&h (US only) payable by check. Just send me an e-mail. Sorry, no credit cards or cash.

The garden featured in the book was registered with the state of Washington as a certified Backyard Sanctuary.
